Ingredients
- 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
- ½ cup buttermilk
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- Oil spray, for air frying
Instructions
- Peel and thinly slice the onion. Place slices in a bowl and cover with buttermilk. Let soak for at least 15 minutes.
- In another bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
- Remove onions from buttermilk, shake off excess, and coat in the flour mixture in batches, ensuring each piece is evenly coated.
- Preheat air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Spray basket lightly with oil. Place onions in a single layer, spray tops with oil, and air fry for 8–10 minutes, shaking halfway through. Watch closely near the end.
- Remove and let cool for a few minutes before serving for maximum crispiness.
Notes
- Use gluten-free flour for a GF option.
- Add cayenne or chili flakes for a spicy version.
- Try red or sweet onions for different flavors.
- Bake at 400°F for 15–20 minutes if you don’t have an air fryer.
- Store at room temp in an airtight container for 1 day and reheat in the air fryer to restore crispiness.
