Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk (for the glaze)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the glaze)
Instructions
- Mix flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast in a large bowl. Work in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Whisk together sour cream, milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Add to flour mixture and stir until just combined. Knead lightly for 1–2 minutes, wrap, and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
- Mix diced apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, and walnuts (if using).
- Roll chilled dough into a rectangle, place apple filling down the center, cut slits along sides, and fold over filling to create a braid.
- Bake in preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
- While baking, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make glaze.
- Once kringle cools slightly, drizzle glaze over the top and slice into servings.
Notes
- Replace apples with pears or mixed berries for variation.
- Add nutmeg or ginger for extra warmth.
- Omit walnuts for a nut-free version.
- Substitute part of butter with cream cheese for richer dough.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature up to 2 days or in the refrigerator up to 1 week.
- Reheat slices in the oven to restore flakiness.
