A soft, flaky braided pastry filled with warm, spiced apples and finished with a sweet vanilla glaze, perfect for breakfast or dessert.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for the glaze)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the glaze)

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast in a large bowl. Work in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Whisk together sour cream, milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Add to flour mixture and stir until just combined. Knead lightly for 1–2 minutes, wrap, and refrigerate at least 1 hour.
  3. Mix diced apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, and walnuts (if using).
  4. Roll chilled dough into a rectangle, place apple filling down the center, cut slits along sides, and fold over filling to create a braid.
  5. Bake in preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 25–30 minutes until golden brown.
  6. While baking, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make glaze.
  7. Once kringle cools slightly, drizzle glaze over the top and slice into servings.

Notes

  • Replace apples with pears or mixed berries for variation.
  • Add nutmeg or ginger for extra warmth.
  • Omit walnuts for a nut-free version.
  • Substitute part of butter with cream cheese for richer dough.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature up to 2 days or in the refrigerator up to 1 week.
  • Reheat slices in the oven to restore flakiness.
