A creamy baked potato casserole made with thinly sliced potatoes, garlic, butter, rich cream, and melted mozzarella cheese, baked until tender with a golden cheesy top.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a small baking dish with a little of the butter.
  3. Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly so they cook evenly.
  4. In a small bowl mix the heavy cream, minced garlic, salt, and black pepper.
  5. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes.
  7. Sprinkle half of the shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
  8. Add the remaining potatoes in an even layer.
  9. Pour the rest of the cream mixture over the top.
  10. Dot the remaining butter over the dish.
  11. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 35 minutes.
  12. Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese on top, and bake for another 15–20 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and lightly golden.
  13. Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Slice the potatoes thinly (about 1/8 inch) for even cooking.
  • Covering the dish during the first bake helps soften the potatoes.
  • Add chopped parsley or dried herbs for extra flavor.
  • Mix a little cheddar cheese with mozzarella for a deeper flavor.
  • A pinch of paprika can add color and mild warmth.
  • Let the dish rest briefly before serving so the sauce thickens slightly.
