This Cabbage and Ground Beef Skillet is a hearty, one-pan meal combining tender cabbage, seasoned ground beef, tomatoes, and warm spices. It’s easy, comforting, and perfect for busy weeknights or a cozy dinner at home.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (or lamb/chicken)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

23 garlic cloves, minced

1/2 head green cabbage, thinly sliced

1 tbsp tomato paste (or 1 tsp tomato concentrate)

1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (or 2 fresh tomatoes, peeled and chopped)

1 tsp paprika

1/2 tsp black pepper

Salt, to taste

23 tbsp olive oil or butter

1 cup water or beef broth

Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef, season lightly, and cook until browned.
  2. Stir in chopped onion and garlic. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  3. Add tomato paste, diced tomatoes, paprika, and black pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the sliced cabbage. It will look like a lot, but it cooks down.
  5. Pour in water or broth, cover, and let simmer for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender.
  6. Adjust seasoning as needed. Serve hot, topped with parsley if desired, and enjoy with crusty bread or rice.

Notes

  • Add chili flakes or hot sauce for a spicy version.
  • Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter dish.
  • A splash of vinegar or lemon juice at the end adds brightness.
  • Top with shredded cheese and broil for a cheesy version.
  • Red cabbage can be used as a substitute, though the flavor and color will vary.
