  • Total Time: 23 minutes
  • Yield: 12 biscuits

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

1 cup cold buttermilk

1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese

2 tablespoons finely chopped chives

2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and garlic powder.
  3. Add cold butter and cut it into the flour using a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour in cold buttermilk and stir gently until just combined—do not overmix.
  5. Fold in cheddar cheese and chopped chives.
  6. Use a spoon or cookie scoop to drop dough onto prepared baking sheet, spacing them 1–2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 15–18 minutes, until tops are golden brown.
  8. Brush the tops with melted butter immediately after baking. Garnish with extra chives if desired.

Notes

  • Swap cheddar for pepper jack, gouda, or Monterey jack.
  • Add chopped jalapeños or crumbled bacon for extra flavor.
  • Use scallions or parsley if chives are unavailable.
  • Add smoked paprika or cayenne for a spicier version.
  • Store at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.
