A crispy fusion appetizer combining the flavors of Mexican chile rellenos with crunchy Asian-style wontons. Filled with roasted green chilies and melted Monterey Jack cheese, these golden bites are fried until crisp and served with a bold jalapeño soy dipping sauce.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 30 wonton wrappers
  • 1 lb Monterey Jack cheese, cut into 1/21 1/2 inch strips
  • 2 roasted green chilies, peeled, seeded, and cut into thin strips
  • 2 hot green chilies or jalapeños, seeded and cut into thin strips
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 fresh jalapeño, finely sliced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling by slicing the Monterey Jack cheese into strips and cutting the roasted green chilies and jalapeños into thin strips.
  2. Place a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Add one strip of cheese and a few chili strips in the center.
  3. Brush the edges of the wrapper with beaten egg.
  4. Fold the wrapper into a triangle or envelope shape and press the edges firmly to seal.
  5. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or fryer to 175°C (350°F).
  7. Fry the wontons in small batches for 2–3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, water, rice vinegar, honey, sesame oil, sliced jalapeño, minced garlic, and grated ginger.
  10. Stir the sauce well until fully combined.
  11. Serve the crispy wontons hot with the jalapeño soy sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Ensure the wonton wrappers are sealed tightly with egg to prevent cheese from leaking during frying.
  • Roasted Anaheim or mild green chilies work well for authentic chile relleno flavor.
  • Wontons can be assembled ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator before frying.
  • For a lighter option, cook them in an air fryer or bake them in the oven.
  • Serve immediately for the best crispy texture.
