  • Total Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Yield: 8 slices

Ingredients

  • For the dough:
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (110–115°F)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for dusting)
  • For the apple filling:
  • 4 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • For the vanilla glaze:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit until foamy (5–10 minutes).
  2. Mix in butter, salt, and eggs. Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes. Place in greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled (1–1.5 hours).
  4. While dough rises, cook apples, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice in a pan over medium heat until softened. Cool completely.
  5. Roll dough into a 12×18-inch rectangle. Spread cooled apple filling, leaving a 1-inch border.
  6. Roll from the long side, pinch to seal, and shape into a ring on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cut slits 1 inch apart and gently twist sections to expose filling.
  7. Bake at 375°F for 25–30 minutes until golden. Cool for 10 minutes on the sheet, then transfer to a rack.
  8. Whisk powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk to form glaze. Drizzle over cooled kringle and let set before slicing.

Notes

  • Use Granny Smith apples for tartness or Honeycrisp for sweetness.
  • Add nuts or swap in other warm spices like cardamom or ginger.
  • Cover loosely with foil if browning too quickly.
  • Make dough ahead and chill overnight for convenience.
  • Store at room temp for 2 days or in the fridge for up to 4 days.
