Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
8 oz mushrooms, sliced
1 small onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp butter or oil
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1/2 cup sour cream
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
Salt and black pepper, to taste
8 oz egg noodles (or rice/mashed potatoes as base)
Optional garnish: fresh parsley or a spoon of Dijon mustard
Instructions
- Heat butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions, mushrooms, and garlic until soft and golden.
- Add ground beef, breaking it up, and cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce if using.
- Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir until fully absorbed.
- Gradually pour in beef broth, stirring constantly until sauce thickens.
- Remove skillet from heat, stir in sour cream until smooth and creamy.
- Return to low heat briefly to warm through, avoiding boiling to prevent sauce separation.
- Serve over cooked egg noodles or preferred base, garnished with parsley or Dijon mustard if desired.
Notes
- Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
- Stir in Dijon mustard with sour cream for extra tang.
- Substitute sour cream with Greek yogurt if needed.
- For gluten-free, replace flour with cornstarch and serve over gluten-free pasta or rice.
- Add spinach or peas near the end for color and nutrients.
