Ingredients
- 2–3 large Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Cooking spray or 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (optional cinnamon sugar coating)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional cinnamon sugar coating)
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce or vanilla yogurt (optional dipping sauce)
Instructions
- Wash, peel, and core the apples, then slice them into fry-shaped sticks about 1/2 inch thick.
- Place the apple slices in a bowl and toss them with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Prepare three bowls: one with flour, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg; one with beaten eggs and vanilla extract; and one with panko breadcrumbs.
- Dredge each apple slice in the flour mixture, then dip it into the egg mixture, and finally coat it with the panko breadcrumbs, pressing lightly so the coating sticks.
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
- Arrange the coated apple fries in a single layer in the basket, leaving space between each piece.
- Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray.
- Air fry at 193°C (380°F) for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
- If desired, toss the hot apple fries in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
- Serve warm with caramel sauce or vanilla yogurt for dipping.
Notes
- Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp so they hold their shape during cooking.
- Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket to ensure crispiness.
- Lightly spraying with oil helps achieve a golden crust.
- Crushed cornflakes or crackers can replace breadcrumbs for a different texture.
- Serve immediately for the best crisp texture.
