Ingredients
- Main:
- 1 large onion, sliced into 1/2-inch thick rings
- 8 mozzarella cheese sticks, cut in half crosswise
- For the coating:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs
- 1 cup regular breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- For frying:
- 3 cups vegetable oil
Instructions
- Slice onion into 1/2-inch thick rings and separate them. Pair similar-sized rings together.
- Place a half mozzarella stick between two matching onion rings to form a stuffed ring. Repeat with remaining rings.
- Arrange stuffed rings on a tray and freeze for at least 1 hour.
- Prepare three bowls: flour in the first; whisked eggs and milk in the second; breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper in the third.
- Coat each frozen ring in flour, dip into egg mixture, then coat thoroughly with breadcrumb mixture.
- For extra crispiness, repeat the egg and breadcrumb coating.
- Heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry rings in batches for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Serve immediately while hot and cheesy.
Notes
- Freezing prevents cheese from leaking during frying.
- Maintain oil temperature at 350°F for best crispiness.
- Double coating ensures a thicker, crunchier crust.
- Low-moisture mozzarella works best.
- Best served immediately for optimal texture.
