A hearty, comforting casserole that transforms classic sloppy joe into a cheesy, biscuit‑topped bake. Ground beef in tangy sauce meets fluffy biscuit pieces for a crowd‑pleasing one‑dish dinner.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 12 oz biscuits, quartered
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup water
  • 3 tsp brown sugar
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 ½ tsp mustard
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ⅓ tsp salt
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • Optional Add‑Ons:
  • ¼ cup diced green bell pepper
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tbsp chopped parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 °F (175 °C). Lightly grease a 9×13‑inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef, breaking it up, for 5–7 minutes until no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
  3. Stir in ketchup, water, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Let the mixture simmer for 4–5 minutes until slightly thickened.
  4. While sauce simmers, cut biscuits into quarters.
  5. In a mixing bowl, gently combine the sloppy joe mixture and biscuit pieces, coating the biscuits in sauce.
  6. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
  7. Bake for 28–30 minutes, until the biscuits are golden and the cheese is bubbly.
  8. Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes before serving to help it set and make serving easier.

Notes

  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Swap or mix different cheeses like mozzarella or pepper jack for variation.
  • Stir in diced onions, mushrooms, or bell peppers for extra texture and nutrition.
  • Add a pinch of chili flakes or hot sauce for heat.
  • A dash of BBQ sauce adds a smoky layer of flavor.
  • To prep ahead: cook the meat mixture first, refrigerate, then assemble and bake when ready.
  • If you don’t have biscuits, you can use crescent roll dough or cubed bread—though the texture will differ.
