- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese (optional)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Slice French bread loaf in half lengthwise and set aside.
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook until soft.
- Add garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

- Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
- Place bread halves on a baking sheet and spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over each half.
- Sprinkle with cheese if using.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the bread is crisp and cheese is melted.
- Slice and serve warm.
Notes
- Use ground turkey for a lighter version.
- Add chili flakes or hot sauce for heat.
- Mix in bell peppers or mushrooms for added texture.
- Lightly toast the bread before adding filling to prevent sogginess.
- Only store the meat mixture separately for best results.
