Ingredients

  • 1 French bread loaf
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Slice French bread loaf in half lengthwise and set aside.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook until soft.
  4. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess grease.
  6. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes until thickened.
  7. Place bread halves on a baking sheet and spoon the sloppy joe mixture evenly over each half.
  8. Sprinkle with cheese if using.
  9. Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the bread is crisp and cheese is melted.
  10. Slice and serve warm.
