This hamburger steak with country gravy is a cozy, one-skillet meal made with seasoned ground beef patties and a creamy, peppery gravy. It’s the perfect hearty dinner for any night of the week.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 pinch ground cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 3 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Mashed potatoes or egg noodles, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, salt, onion powder, and garlic powder until just combined. Form into 6 patties.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown patties for 4–5 minutes per side. Transfer to an oven-safe plate and keep warm in a 300°F oven.
  3. Reduce skillet heat to medium-low and melt butter. Add flour, cayenne, garlic powder, and onion powder. Whisk constantly until golden and fragrant, about 1–2 minutes.
  4. Slowly whisk in the milk and cook, stirring often, until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Return patties to skillet and simmer in the gravy for 2–3 minutes to warm through. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or noodles.

Notes

  • Add sautéed mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor.
  • Use whole milk for a richer gravy, or substitute lower-fat milk if preferred.
  • Handle beef gently to keep patties tender and avoid overmixing.
  • Great served over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
