Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 pinch ground cayenne pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 3 cups milk
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Mashed potatoes or egg noodles, for serving (optional)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, salt, onion powder, and garlic powder until just combined. Form into 6 patties.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown patties for 4–5 minutes per side. Transfer to an oven-safe plate and keep warm in a 300°F oven.
- Reduce skillet heat to medium-low and melt butter. Add flour, cayenne, garlic powder, and onion powder. Whisk constantly until golden and fragrant, about 1–2 minutes.
- Slowly whisk in the milk and cook, stirring often, until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Return patties to skillet and simmer in the gravy for 2–3 minutes to warm through. Serve hot with mashed potatoes or noodles.
Notes
- Add sautéed mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor.
- Use whole milk for a richer gravy, or substitute lower-fat milk if preferred.
- Handle beef gently to keep patties tender and avoid overmixing.
- Great served over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice.
- Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
