Soft and fluffy homemade breadsticks topped with melted mozzarella, garlic butter, and herbs, baked until golden and bubbly for the perfect cheesy side dish or snack.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Yield: 10 breadsticks

Ingredients

  • 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 2½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup shredded cheddar or Gruyère cheese (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Pinch of flaky salt (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 45–60 minutes until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Roll the dough into a 9 × 13 inch rectangle.
  7. Transfer the dough to the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush the dough with melted butter and sprinkle garlic and Italian seasoning evenly over the surface.
  9. Spread mozzarella and optional cheddar or Gruyère cheese evenly on top.
  10. Bake for 12–15 minutes until cheese is bubbly and edges are golden brown.
  11. Remove from oven and brush lightly with additional melted butter if desired.
  12. Slice into breadsticks and serve warm with marinara or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Store-bought pizza dough can be used for a quicker version.
  • Use a mix of cheeses like provolone or Monterey Jack for richer flavor.
  • Add dried oregano, basil, or parsley for herb-style breadsticks.
  • Sprinkle Parmesan and chopped parsley after baking for garlic parmesan breadsticks.
  • Add jalapeños or extra red pepper flakes for a spicy version.
  • Allow breadsticks to cool completely before freezing.
  • Reheat in the oven instead of the microwave to keep them crispy.
