These Homemade Hush Puppies are golden, crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside — the perfect quick side or snack using a simple cornbread batter.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 12–16 hush puppies

Ingredients

  • 1 box Jiffy cornbread mix
  • ½ cup onion, grated
  • 5 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix together the cornbread mix, grated onion, buttermilk, and beaten egg until just combined.
  2. Heat oil in a fryer or heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C).
  3. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, careful not to overcrowd.
  4. Fry for 2–4 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  5. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels before serving.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the batter to keep hush puppies light.
  • Use a thermometer to maintain oil temperature for even frying.
  • Serve hot for best texture.
  • Customize with herbs, spices, or corn for variety.
