Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons red gel food coloring
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 large eggs
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened (for filling)
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for filling)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 15×10 inch jelly roll pan with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a large bowl, mix sugar and oil until well combined. Beat in eggs one at a time.
- Stir in buttermilk and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Mix in red gel food coloring for that signature red hue.
- Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
- Pour batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Bake for 12–15 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Dust a clean kitchen towel with powdered sugar. Flip the warm cake onto the towel and gently roll it up with the towel inside. Let cool completely.
- Unroll the cooled cake and spread a filling made by beating softened cream cheese with powdered sugar until smooth.
- Roll the cake back up (without the towel), wrap in plastic, and chill for 1 hour before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Roll the cake while warm to prevent cracking.
- Let the chilled cake rest at room temperature before serving for best texture.
- Decorate with powdered sugar or cocoa dusting for an elegant finish.
