  • Total Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4–6 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 3 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F) and lightly grease a baking dish with olive oil.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, paprika, and parsley.
  3. Mix until evenly combined and shape the mixture into small meatballs about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
  4. Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly (about 1/8 inch thick).
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  6. Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer in the prepared baking dish.
  7. Place the meatballs evenly over the potatoes.
  8. Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes and meatballs.
  9. Sprinkle half of the mozzarella and cheddar cheese over the layer.
  10. Add the remaining potato slices as a second layer.
  11. Pour the remaining cream mixture over the casserole.
  12. Top with the remaining mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
  13. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 35 minutes.
  14. Remove the foil and continue baking for 20–25 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  15. Let the casserole rest for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Slice the potatoes thinly to ensure they cook evenly during baking.
  • You can add vegetables like mushrooms, spinach, or bell peppers for extra flavor.
  • Freshly shredded cheese melts more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.
  • Allow the casserole to rest briefly before serving so the layers set.
  • Serve with a simple salad or roasted vegetables for a balanced meal.
