Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp oil
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 slices rye or sandwich bread
Instructions
- Season ground beef with salt and pepper and shape into two thin, oval-shaped patties that fit your bread slices.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook patties until browned on both sides and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add butter and oil. Cook onions and mushrooms over medium heat, stirring often, until caramelized (about 8–10 minutes).
- Lower the heat, return patties to the pan, and top with Swiss cheese. Let the cheese melt slightly.
- Assemble sandwiches by placing a patty with melted cheese and a spoonful of mushroom-onion mixture between two slices of bread.
- Lightly butter the outside of each sandwich. Grill in the skillet over medium heat until bread is golden and crisp and cheese is fully melted, flipping once.
- Slice and serve warm.
Notes
- Swap ground beef with ground turkey for a lighter option.
- Try provolone or mozzarella for a different cheese flavor.
- Add a splash of Worcestershire sauce or garlic to the mushrooms for extra depth.
- Use rye bread for a traditional touch, or any sturdy sandwich bread.
- Reheat in a skillet to maintain crispness; avoid microwaving if possible.
