The Mushroom Swiss Patty Melt is a comforting stovetop sandwich packed with savory ground beef, caramelized onions and mushrooms, and gooey Swiss cheese. Grilled between slices of crisp, golden bread, it’s diner-style comfort food made easily at home.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices rye or sandwich bread

Instructions

  1. Season ground beef with salt and pepper and shape into two thin, oval-shaped patties that fit your bread slices.
  2. Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook patties until browned on both sides and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add butter and oil. Cook onions and mushrooms over medium heat, stirring often, until caramelized (about 8–10 minutes).
  4. Lower the heat, return patties to the pan, and top with Swiss cheese. Let the cheese melt slightly.
  5. Assemble sandwiches by placing a patty with melted cheese and a spoonful of mushroom-onion mixture between two slices of bread.
  6. Lightly butter the outside of each sandwich. Grill in the skillet over medium heat until bread is golden and crisp and cheese is fully melted, flipping once.
  7. Slice and serve warm.

  • Try provolone or mozzarella for a different cheese flavor.
