Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 8 slices rye bread
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
- Butter, for grilling
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, and Worcestershire sauce to make the secret sauce. Set aside.
- Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized (15–20 minutes). Remove and set aside.
- Divide ground beef into 4 thin patties, season with salt and pepper, and shape slightly larger than bread slices.
- Cook patties in the same skillet over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side until cooked through. Set aside with the onions.
- Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. On a skillet or griddle over medium heat, place 4 slices butter-side down. Top with Swiss cheese, a patty, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, and another bread slice, butter-side up.
- Grill each sandwich 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted. Let rest briefly before slicing.
- Serve hot with secret sauce on the side or drizzled inside the sandwich.
Notes
- Use ground turkey, chicken, or plant-based patties as alternatives.
- Try sourdough or Texas toast if rye isn’t available.
- Make caramelized onions ahead to save time.
- For extra flavor, use pepper jack cheese or add chili flakes to the sauce.
- Store sauce separately when refrigerating leftovers to maintain freshness.
