Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Oil, for frying
  • For coating:
  • 1/2 cup sugar (or cinnamon sugar)
  • 2 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk, warm water, sugar, and instant yeast. Let sit for a few minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix in egg, softened butter, and salt. Gradually add flour until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide into 10–12 equal pieces.
  6. Roll each piece into a rope, then twist two ropes together to form a donut twist.
  7. Let shaped donuts rest for 20–30 minutes for a second rise.
  8. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry donuts in batches until golden brown on both sides.
  9. While warm, brush with melted butter and roll in sugar or cinnamon sugar.
