Crispy, golden onion ring chips made from thinly sliced onions tossed in a seasoned flour-cornstarch mix and quickly fried to crunchy perfection. A fun, addictive snack that’s easy to make and highly customizable.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, sliced into thin rings
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornstarch
  • Salt, to taste
  • Optional seasonings: paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper
  • Vegetable or canola oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Separate the thin onion rings and pat them dry with paper towels to help the coating stick better.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, a pinch of salt, and any desired seasonings.
  3. Toss the onion rings in the flour mixture until well coated.
  4. Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the coated onion rings in small batches for 2–3 minutes until crisp and golden.
  6. Transfer to a paper towel–lined plate to drain excess oil.
  7. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce or seasoning.

Notes

  • Air-fry at 375°F (190°C) for 8–10 minutes for a lighter version.
  • Sweet or red onions add different flavor profiles.
  • Use a wire rack for draining to keep chips crisp longer.
  • Replace some flour with breadcrumbs for extra crunch.
