This quick white bread recipe yields two soft, fluffy loaves that are perfect for sandwiches, toast, or simply slathered with butter. Easy to make with everyday ingredients and ready in about two hours.

  • Total Time: 2 hours
  • Yield: 2 loaves (10–12 slices each)

Ingredients

2 cups warm milk

2/3 cup sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1/4 cup oil (vegetable, canola, or olive)

6 cups bread flour

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add salt, oil, and bread flour. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down, divide into two, and shape into loaves. Place in greased loaf pans.
  6. Let rise again for 30–45 minutes until puffy.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Cool in pans for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • Use half whole wheat flour for a heartier loaf.
  • Add herbs like rosemary or thyme for extra flavor.
  • Swap oil with melted butter for a richer taste.
  • Ensure yeast is foamy before proceeding to confirm it’s active.
