Ingredients
- 3 medium ripe bananas, mashed (about 1 1/2 cups)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 large eggs, room temperature
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
- 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips, plus extra for topping
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan, lining with parchment if desired.
- In a large bowl, mash bananas until smooth, then whisk in butter, brown sugar, eggs, yogurt, and vanilla until combined.
- In another bowl, whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
- Fold dry ingredients into wet mixture gently until just combined.
- Fold in chocolate chips and nuts if using.
- Pour batter into prepared pan and top with extra chocolate chips.
- Bake for 55–70 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out with moist crumbs.
- Cool in pan for 10–15 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely before slicing.
Notes
- Use very ripe bananas for best sweetness and moisture.
- Avoid overmixing to keep the bread tender.
- Cover loosely with foil if top browns too quickly.
- Can substitute butter with oil for a dairy-free version.
- Add espresso powder to enhance chocolate flavor.
