A comforting dessert featuring tender dumplings simmered in a sweet, syrupy blackberry sauce, offering a perfect balance of tart and sweet flavors.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • For the blackberry sauce:
  • 1 quart blackberries, fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the dumplings:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine blackberries, water, and sugar over medium heat.
  2. Bring to a soft boil, stirring occasionally as berries break down.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Add lemon juice and vanilla extract, stir to combine.
  5. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  6. Mix melted butter and milk, then combine with dry ingredients to form soft dough.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto simmering sauce.
  8. Cover saucepan and cook on low heat for 15 minutes without lifting lid.
  9. Check dumplings with a toothpick; if clean, they are done.
  10. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Do not overmix dumpling dough to keep it light and fluffy.
  • Frozen blackberries can be used without thawing.
  • Add cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor.
  • Reduce sugar if berries are very sweet.
  • Store leftovers refrigerated for up to 3 days.
  • Add a splash of water when reheating if sauce thickens.
