A comforting dessert made with juicy blackberries simmered into a sweet syrup and topped with soft, fluffy dumplings that soak up all the rich flavor.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 4–6 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 quart fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. In a large saucepan, combine blackberries, water, sugar, and salt.
  2. Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  3. Reduce heat and let simmer for about 5 minutes until berries release their juices.
  4. Stir in the lemon juice.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  6. Add melted butter and milk, stirring until just combined into a soft dough.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto the simmering blackberry sauce, spacing them evenly.
  8. Cover the pan with a lid and cook for 12–15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  9. Check that dumplings are puffed and firm, then remove from heat.
  10. Let rest for a few minutes before serving warm.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the dough to keep dumplings light and fluffy.
  • Keep the lid closed while cooking to trap steam.
  • Frozen blackberries can be used without thawing.
  • Adjust sugar depending on berry sweetness.
  • Add vanilla or warm spices like cinnamon for extra flavor.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a richer dessert.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave with a splash of water.
