Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 lb ground lamb
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 6 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 teaspoons kosher salt
- 2 teaspoons black pepper
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon dried marjoram (optional)
- 1 cup tzatziki sauce
- 1 large red onion, thinly sliced
- 2–4 tomatoes, sliced
- 1–2 cucumbers, sliced
- 8–10 pita breads
- 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare tzatziki sauce and refrigerate to chill.
- Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Finely chop onion and garlic.
- In a large bowl, combine beef, lamb, butter, eggs, milk, lemon juice, breadcrumbs, onion, garlic, salt, pepper, and spices.
- Mix gently until just combined.
- Shape mixture into about 10 oval patties and place on baking sheet.
- Bake for 15–20 minutes until cooked through.
- Warm pita bread and prepare sliced vegetables.
- Spread tzatziki on pita, add sliced gyro meat, and top with vegetables and dill.
- Fold and serve immediately.
Notes
- Avoid overmixing to keep meat tender.
- Lamb adds authentic flavor but can be substituted with beef.
- Warm pita before serving for best texture.
- Serve with extra tzatziki for added flavor.
