These homemade hot dog buns are soft, fluffy, and lightly sweet with a golden crust and tender texture. Perfect for hot dogs, sandwiches, or serving alongside meals, they are easy to make from scratch and taste far better than store-bought buns.

  • Total Time: 2 hours 20 minutes
  • Yield: 10 buns

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter for brushing the tops (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water and active dry yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the honey, olive oil, and salt. Stir until combined.
  3. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough gently and divide it into 10 equal portions.
  7. Shape each portion into a bun about 5–6 inches long and place on a parchment-lined baking tray.
  8. Cover the buns and let them rise again for 30–40 minutes until puffy.
  9. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  10. Bake for 15–18 minutes or until lightly golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and brush with melted butter if desired.
  12. Allow the buns to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Do not add too much flour, or the buns may become dense.
  • Brushing the buns with butter after baking helps keep them soft.
  • Instant yeast can be substituted for active dry yeast.
  • Whole wheat flour can replace half the all-purpose flour for a heartier texture.
  • These buns freeze well for up to 2 months.
  • Sesame or poppy seeds make a delicious topping variation.
  • Shape the dough into round buns if using for burgers.
