This Italian Pie Casserole is a hearty and comforting dinner made with flaky crescent roll dough, savory ground beef, rich marinara sauce, and layers of melted mozzarella and Parmesan cheese baked into one delicious Italian-inspired casserole.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 package (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup spaghetti sauce or marinara sauce
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef, chopped onion, and minced garlic. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes until the beef is browned and the onion is softened.
  3. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
  4. Stir the spaghetti sauce into the beef mixture and simmer for about 5 minutes.
  5. Separate the crescent roll dough into triangles and arrange them in a pie plate with the pointed ends hanging slightly over the edges.
  6. Press the seams together gently to create a crust.
  7. Spoon the beef mixture evenly over the dough.
  8. Sprinkle 1 cup of mozzarella cheese and half of the Parmesan cheese over the beef layer.
  9. Fold the dough points inward toward the center, partially covering the filling.
  10. Top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  11. Sprinkle garlic powder, onion powder, and parsley flakes on top if desired.
  12. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
  13. Allow the casserole to rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Drain the beef thoroughly to prevent a soggy crust.
  • Pizza dough can replace crescent dough for a thicker crust.
  • Add mushrooms, spinach, bell peppers, or olives for extra vegetables.
  • Use Italian sausage instead of ground beef for richer flavor.
  • Leftovers reheat well in the oven for a crispier crust.
  • Serve with salad, garlic bread, or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.
