A quick and flavorful turmeric-black pepper chicken skillet with crisp asparagus, garlic, ginger, and a glossy sweet-tangy sauce perfect for serving over rice or noodles.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast or chicken thighs, thinly sliced
  • 1 pound asparagus, trimmed and sliced diagonally into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or neutral cooking oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
  • 1 tablespoon water, if needed
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro or parsley
  • Cooked rice or rice noodles, for serving
  • Lemon or lime wedges, optional

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together honey, rice vinegar, soy sauce, turmeric, black pepper, garlic, ginger, and salt until smooth.
  2. Pat the sliced chicken dry with paper towels.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add chicken in an even layer and cook for 3–4 minutes until lightly browned and nearly cooked through.
  5. Add asparagus and cook for 2–3 minutes until bright green and crisp-tender.
  6. Pour the turmeric-black pepper sauce into the skillet.
  7. Stir constantly for 1–2 minutes until everything is evenly coated and glossy.
  8. Add 1 tablespoon water if needed to loosen the sauce.
  9. Taste and adjust seasoning with extra salt, pepper, or lemon/lime juice.
  10. Serve warm over rice or noodles and garnish with fresh herbs.

Notes

  • Chicken thighs stay especially juicy and flavorful in this recipe.
  • Do not overcook the asparagus to maintain its crisp texture.
  • Fresh ginger and garlic provide the best flavor.
  • Use tamari instead of soy sauce for a gluten-free version.
  • Turmeric may stain surfaces and utensils, so clean spills quickly.
  • Add chili flakes or chili paste for extra heat.
  • Works well with additional vegetables like bell peppers or snap peas.
